Flotation FAQ

  • What is a Float Tank?

Flotation tanks are a light and sound-free environments containing twelve inches of water with 550kg of Epsom salt (Magnesium Sulphate) dissolved inside. The water is heated to skin temperature, so that once you are settled in the tank, the sensation of water on your skin will slowly fade away.
  • How Warm is the Water?

The water in a sensory deprivation tank is heated to skin temperature and nearly saturated with Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate), providing buoyancy so you float more easily. You enter the tank nude and are cut off from all outside stimulation, including sound, sight, and gravity when the tank's lid or door is closed.
  • When Were Float Tanks Developed?

Float tanks have been around for over 50 years. The first float tank was actually developed in 1954 by John C Lily. That tank involved full submersion in water and a breathing apparatus that completely covered your face. The first lay down, commercial tanks were invented in the early 70’s and they developed in to the modern advanced luxury tanks we use today.
  • What's The Float Tank Experience Like?

Flotation tanks create an experience as though the outside world has quietly faded away, leaving you in your own space for relaxation. The buoyancy created by the dense Epsom-salt solution effectively removes the feeling of gravity on the body, bringing you close to an experience of total weightlessness.
  • What Does Sensory Deprivation Do to the Brain?

Sensory deprivation, also known as Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy (REST), is a technique where sensory input (sound, light, smell, etc.) is minimised. With an absence of sensory input you can enter a super-relaxed theta brainwave (lucid dream/meditation) state where the concept of time vanishes. Along with measuring theta waves in our near sleep state scientists have also observed theta waves during the zen meditation of very experienced Buddhist monks and in regular people during a session in a float pod. It’s even been said that an hour in the pod is equivalent to 4 hours of sleep.
  • What is the Purpose of a Float Tank?

Flotation Therapy offers a way of achieving deep relaxation. Spending an hour in a dark, soundproof tank, suspended in a warm solution of Epsom salt heated to skin temperature, provides proven muscle relaxation, better sleep, decrease in pain, and decreased stress and anxiety.
